The Museum of South Texas History welcomes Joseph E. Chance, Ph.D., as he presents "Murder in Mathis: The Making of a Self-Published Book," at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 30. Dr. Chance's presentation will focus on the writing and marketing of self-published books, demonstrating his latest non-fiction publication as a case study. Tony Corso of CopyZone, a full-service print house located in McAllen, Texas, will also be on hand to answer technical questions about self-publishing. This Sunday Speaker Series program will include Dr. Chance's backstory behind his book and will conclude with a question and answer session.
A self-proclaimed "student of military and Texas history," Dr. Chance is an accomplished and well-known local author of books, essays and newspaper columns, including "History by Chance," a weekly column published in the Valley Morning Star. A long-time Rio Grande Valley (RGV) resident, Dr. Chance shares his knowledge of Texas history through his many history books and other publications. This Sunday Dr. Chance will share with audience members how to self-publish a book through his experience in publishing "Murder in Mathis," a murder mystery that took place in Mathis, Texas.
Set in rural South Texas in the 1920s, "Murder in Mathis" is a true crime story of the capture, trial and execution of a sociopathic murderer that almost committed the "perfect crime." In addition to discussing his latest book, Dr. Chance will provide self-publishing steps and tips, offering encouragement to anyone facing the challenge of becoming a published author.
